History[edit | edit source]

Geography[edit | edit source]

Hazards[edit | edit source]

Tectonic activity[edit | edit source]

Due to the terrain being mountainous in some parts, Zamolodchikova frequently experiences earthquakes, despite no major tectonic faults located on the territory. However, most are minor and do not do much damage. It is possible that more powerful earthquakes strike Zamolodchikova, such as the Katya earthquake of April 23, 1969, of a 9.2 magnitude on the Richter scale, the most powerful the country ever experienced. Entire villages were damaged and more than three hundred people died. Before this event, Zamolodchikovans didn't take sismic risks seriously, and the government had no plans to manage such catastrophic events. In 1970, the ZSF (Zamolodchikovan Scientists' Forum) were ordered by the government to create a prevention plan for eventual future destructive sismic events such as earthquakes or tsunamis.

Tsunamis are extremely rare as well in Zamolodchikova, although one affecting the extremely populous Northern coast is expected to happen in the next centuries, decades or even years. As a result, most inhabitants have been taught at school the things to do if an earthquake/tsunami happens, especially in high-risk zones.

In 1971, the government introduced the Security Plan for Tectonic Events (SPTE). It is constituted of different colour levels, and are to be applied in the concerned areas if sismologists detect tectonic anomalies.

Level Colour Definition Measures
T2 Cookies and Cream Major earthquake detected out at sea: tsunami expected Evacuation decrees endorsed if feasible, interdiction of bathing, surfing, sailing and sea-related activities, harsh confinment measures, elecricity cuts, provision of public spaces for eventual victims
T1 Cristal Minor earthquake detected out at sea: high waves expected Interdiction of bathing, surfing, sailing and sea-related activities,
E3 Desert Imminent danger due to intensifying earth tremors: very high sismic risk Harsh confinment measures, elecricity cuts, provision of public spaces for eventual victims
E2 Diamond Important earth tremors detected in the area: high sismic risk Restrictions, provision of public spaces for eventual victims
Risk of aftershocks: high sismic risk (after an earthquake) Confinment measures and electricity cuts retained, provision of public spaces for eventual victims
E1 Green Small earth tremors detected in the area: sismic risk None

Volcanic activity[edit | edit source]

Volcanoes on the Zamolodchikovan terrtory are mainly located in the Northern Isles, a ocean conquered territory. Due to the area not being fully incorporated into Zamolodchikova yet, no plan has been put in place.

Cyclonic activity[edit | edit source]

Category 5 Hurricane Francisco prior to landfall in Zamolodchikova, 2003

The Southern coast of Zamolodchikova is extremely prone to tropical cyclones. While in the Zamolodchikovan Ocean, they are called "hurricanes", Zamolodchikovan people traditionally call these events shitstormenet ("shit-storms"), due to the shit that they provoke. However, due to globalization, more and more people use the terms huracanet or ciclonen, cognates of "hurricane" and "cyclone".

Tropical waves from Northern countries often results in those storms intensifying just north of Zamolodchikova's coast, and occasionally, these storms make landfall in Zamolodchikovan territory, such as, recently, Francisco (Category 5 at landfall) in 2003, Matilde in 2012 (also Cat 5 at landfall), India (Category 3) and Nadine (Category 4), both in 2017.

In April 2003, Hurricane Francisco directly made landfall as a Category 5, on Matildefjord, one of the most populous cities of the country. It caused extensive flooding due to storm surge and electricity cuts for 84% of the urban area's population. Entire neighbourhoods were destroyed and 80 people died directly or indirectly from the storm, which would eventually dissipate inland. This event made the government change the usual hurricane prevention plan that was in place, to include prevention of storm surge effects. Today, the Shitstormenet Security Plan (ShitSP) has been enacted each time a storm gets close to or directly make landfall in Zamolodchikovan territory. It is constituted of five different levels.

Level Definition Measures
V (also known as Shit) Storm to make landfall as a major hurricane Evacuation decrees endorsed if feasible, interdiction of bathing, surfing, sailing and sea-related activities, harsh confinment measures, elecricity cuts, provision of anti-flood sand bags and public spaces for eventual victims, immediate closure of all transport systems
IV Storm to make landfall as a hurricane Interdiction of bathing, surfing, sailing and sea-related activities, confinment measures, elecricity cuts, provision of public spaces for eventual victims, closure of all transport systems
III Storm close to shore, very strong wind and high waves Interdiction of bathing, surfing, sailing and sea-related activities, curfew restrictions, provision of anti-flood sand bags and public spaces for eventual victims
II Storm out at sea, strong wind and high waves certain Interdiction of bathing, surfing, sailing and sea-related activities, provision of anti-flood sand bags, potential curfew restrictions
I Storm out at sea, strong wind and high waves plausible Interdiction of bathing, surfing, sailing and sea-related activities,
